She is only here because her sister asked, and her sister asked because the niece is in the choir and somebody had to fill a seat.
The hall is cold at the edges and warm in the middle. There is a paper order of service, folded once, and she is holding it because everybody is holding one. The organ is a small electric thing with a hum under it and the woman playing is very good.
They stand for the first one and she does not look down.
She does not look down for the second one either. She knows the third verse, the one nobody knows, the one where half the room goes quiet and mouths it. She knows that the tune drops on the second line of it. She knows, without knowing how she knows, that the choir is going to take the descant on the last verse and that the moment for it is coming two bars before it arrives, and when it arrives, it lands exactly where she was already listening for it.
Her niece is on the end of the second row, singing with her whole chest and slightly ahead of everyone.
They get to O come let us adore Him, three times over, the way it always goes, and somewhere in the second of the three she hears her own voice and understands two things at once and neither of them will let go of the other.
The first is that she means it. Every word. She is not performing, she is not being polite, she is not going along with a room. If you stopped the organ and asked her, standing there with her coat over her arm, whether she believes it, she would say yes without a pause anywhere in it.
The second is that she has not adored anything in a very long time.
The carol ends. Everybody sits. She folds the paper again along the same crease and keeps hold of it.
You know all the words too, and that has become the strangest part of it, because a person who knows all the words is not supposed to be standing this far off.

The words did not leave
I want to say the first thing plainly, because everything else rests on it, and because the opposite is what most people are quietly braced for.
What you believe is true. All of it. It is not a leftover, it is not a habit wearing the costume of faith, and it is not the residue of a childhood. You know the third verse of a carol nobody knows because it went into you and stayed, and the reason it stayed is that it is real, and real things do that.
Nobody here is going to tell you that your belief is a fake. It is not fake. That is not the problem and it has never been the problem.
Here is the problem, and it is a different animal entirely. Belief that intact and life that far apart is a strange thing to hold, and holding it makes a person feel like a fraud, and feeling like a fraud is exactly what keeps the mouth shut. So the words stay in and the distance stays out and neither one gets spoken about.
You are not a fraud, and the words in your mouth are evidence for you and never against you. I am not saying that to be nice about it. It is written into Deuteronomy 30, and it is the Holy Spirit who has kept a set of words alive in a person for years so that they would be there on the night they were needed.
But the word is very nigh unto thee, in thy mouth, and in thy heart, that thou mayest do it.Deuteronomy 30:14
Read what comes just before it, because Moses is answering precisely the objection sitting in your chest. It is not in heaven, he says, that you should ask who will go up and bring it down. It is not beyond the sea, that you should ask who will cross over and fetch it. Two impossible journeys named and canceled, one up and one across, and the point of naming them is that the distance you are imagining was never there. That is the written word and not my reassurance, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a cancellation this old arrive as present relief in a cold hall.
Nearness is not a distance you close by trying
Notice where the word is, in that verse. In your mouth. In your heart. Not on a shelf you have to reach, and not in a room you have to be admitted to.
That means the standing in the hall with the paper unopened is not the picture you have been reading it as. You have been reading it as a hypocrite standing in a warm room. It is the other thing. It is a person with the word already in their mouth, which is precisely where Scripture says God puts it in people He is drawing near.
You have the word in you already, and it did not get there by your effort and it does not stay there by your upkeep. Deuteronomy 30 says it in the plainest language in the Bible, and it is the Spirit of God who does the keeping, which is why it survived years of not being used.
Now, the part that goes wrong. When a person finally notices the gap, the instinct is to close it by trying, and trying has a shape: a plan, a schedule, a stretch of good behavior, a period of intensity to make up the difference. And it is honest and it is sincere, and it puts the whole weight of nearness on the one person in the room who has no way to carry it.
Coming near is not a stretch of effort. It is a response to a nearness that arrived first. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you, says James 4:8, and the drawing near of God is the larger of those two movements by a distance that cannot be measured. He is not standing at the far end of a hall waiting to see whether you make it.
The one true thing you already have
So what do you actually do with a faith that is entirely intact and entirely unlived. Not a program. One sentence.
Take one thing you know is true and say it out loud about yourself, in the present tense, in your own name. Not about God in general, which is the easy version and the one that changes nothing. About you.
I belong to God. I am His. Christ is in me. He is my Shepherd. Whichever of those you would have sworn to in the hall with your coat over your arm, say that one, and put yourself in the sentence.
You have every right to put your own name into a true sentence, because the truth of it never depended on how near you have been living. It is written in Colossians 3:3 that your life is hid with Christ in God, a thing done to you and not by you, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a line you have known since you were small and makes it land like something happening now.
That is not a technique. Nothing turns because the phrasing was correct. It is simply that a truth held silently for years and a truth said out loud in your own voice sit differently in a person, and God has always been willing to work with a mouth that is open.
The belief is real. The distance is real. Neither one is being used here to convict the other, and you can put down the fear that you are going to be asked to choose which of them is the lie.
You are near tonight, and the nearness is His work, and it did not wait for the gap to be closed from your side. That is written into Deuteronomy 30 and into James 4, and I am reading it to you rather than inventing it, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes an old promise arrive as a present tense thing in a cold hall with a paper order of service in your hand.
Nothing has to be announced. Nobody has to be told. There is no service to attend before this counts and no room you have to be standing in. What comes of the next few weeks is His to decide, at His own pace, and it is not a mark you are being given.
You already know all the words. It turns out that was never the problem. It was the sign.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, standing if you can. You are in Christ, and being in Him is the whole of your standing to speak: it was given to you rather than kept up by you, and it did not lapse during the season you were not using it. Deuteronomy 30:14 is the ground under your feet, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries what you say further than the sound of it goes. The words are not a technique and nothing here turns on getting them right. And what God does with the coming weeks is His to decide, in His own way, and it is not a test you are sitting.
- Four verses without the sheet, you are true, every line of you, and you are not a performance. Deuteronomy 30:14 says the word is very near me, in my mouth and in my heart, and the word in my mouth tonight is the very word that is near.
- Verdict that calls me a fraud, be quiet, in the name of Jesus. It is written that the word was put in my mouth and never left in heaven or across the sea, and the Holy Spirit kept it alive in me through every year I never once used it.
- Lord, I thank You that You never put it up in heaven or across the sea, but as close to me as my own mouth. As it is written the word is in my heart, and I am walking out of this hall talking to You instead of about You.
