Her First Day on My Ward

This message is for the care assistant standing at the ten o'clock break with a paper plate, watching the new starter get the welcome pack and the signed card and the cake with her name on it, glad for her and stung underneath in a way she would be ashamed to say out loud

The new one starts on the Monday and by half past eight the whole floor knows her name.

There is a pack for her. An actual pack, in a folder, with the lanyard already threaded and a card everyone signed on Friday and a laminated sheet of who to ring for what. The manager walks her round personally. Two of the girls have been put down as her buddies for a fortnight, which is written on the whiteboard by the sluice where everyone can see it.

At ten there is cake. Not biscuits from the tin. A cake, from the good bakery on the parade, with her name piped across it in blue.

Nine years ago this woman started on this ward with the door code written on the back of a receipt and somebody saying over her shoulder, you will pick it up.

And she is glad. That is the thing she keeps coming back to all morning, and it is true: she is genuinely glad. She shows the new one the trick with the sticking door on room six. She talks her through the hoist twice and does not once make her feel slow. She means all of it.

She also has something sitting under her ribs from about quarter past eight, and it has been there ever since, and she would sooner walk into the sea than say out loud what it is.

At the break she takes a slice on a paper plate and says it is lovely, and it is lovely.

You are the one with the paper plate. You are not a bitter person and you have not done anything wrong, and there is still something under your ribs, and the worst part of it is not the feeling. The worst part is what you have decided the feeling proves about you.

Her First Day on My Ward

He came out to the man who was stung

Jesus tells a story about a vineyard and a long hot day, and almost everybody remembers the wrong part of it.

Men are hired at first light for the day. More are taken on at nine, and at noon, and at three, and one lot at five in the afternoon with barely an hour of light left. At the end of it they all get the same. The ones who did the whole day in the heat see it happen and they say so, and they are not villains for saying so, and Jesus does not write them as villains.

Then look at what the owner does. He does not send word. He does not have somebody deal with it. He comes out himself to the man who is stung, and the very first word out of his mouth is not a rebuke.

But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong.Matthew 20:13

Friend. That is how the conversation opens. Before a single word of explanation, before anything is put right, the man who is standing there complaining is addressed as somebody who belongs to the household and always did. The generosity that stung him has not moved him one inch out of favor.

You are called friend in the middle of the exact feeling you are ashamed of, and the naming is not a reward for getting over it first. That is not my softness talking. It is written in Matthew 20, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has walked you back into this room rather than letting you take the feeling off somewhere private, which is not what happens to people who are out of favor.

Nothing was taken off you when she got the cake

Here is the accounting, and it is worth doing slowly, because the sting depends on getting it wrong.

The men who worked all day were not short. Not by a coin, not by a minute. What arrived in their hands at the end of the day was exactly what had been agreed at first light, and the man hired at five taking home the same did not reach into their hands and remove anything. That is the owner's whole point, and it is arithmetic before it is theology. I do thee no wrong.

So run it on your morning. The pack, the card, the buddies on the whiteboard, the cake from the good bakery. Every one of those is a real kindness and not one of them came out of you. Nine years of this ward are still nine years of this ward. What you know about the sticking door and the hoist and how to talk a frightened man back to sleep is not diminished by a folder with a lanyard in it.

The sting is not about supply. It never is. It is that being celebrated feels like being seen, and you have wanted to be seen for a long time, and this morning made you notice.

You have not lost one thing this morning, and everything the Father has has been yours the whole time you were counting somebody else's. I am not inventing that over you. Matthew 20 puts the owner's own generosity beyond dispute and the first man's wages beyond reduction, and it is His Spirit making that land on you while the plate is still in your hand.

The feeling is not the verdict on you

Now the part I most want you to hear, because it is the thing actually keeping you out of the room.

Somewhere in there it got decided that a decent person would not feel this. So on top of the sting there is now a second thing, which is the conclusion drawn about yourself for having the first thing, and the second thing is far heavier than the first. That is what keeps a person standing in a yard while a party goes on inside, and it is the loneliest place in the whole story.

Jesus never once treats that man as though the complaint disqualified him. The owner comes out to him, calls him friend, and tells him the truth. That is the entire response. There is no lecture about gratitude, no suggestion that he has forfeited his standing, and no requirement that he feel differently before he is spoken to kindly.

You have the standing to walk in with the feeling still in you, and the standing is yours in Christ rather than earned by having a better heart about it first. That is what the written word says about anybody in Him, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries you through a door like that, which is a door He has already opened from the other side.

The breakthrough

So put the plate down and hear this.

You are the friend in that story, and everything the Father has is already yours and always was. That is the written word of God over you and not my reading of your morning, and it is His Spirit who kept you in the staff room instead of letting you take it home, so that a good woman with something under her ribs would find out she was never the villain of anybody's parable. The owner came out. He came out to the one who was stung. He calls that one friend before he explains a thing.

Nothing was taken off you this morning. What you have been carrying was never a wage in the first place, and you can stop counting a day that was already yours.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, plate down, head up. You are in Christ, and being in Him is the whole of your standing to speak; the authority is His and it has been given to you, not earned by having a generous week. Matthew 20 is the ground under the words and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries them, so none of this is a technique and feeling better is not the qualification. The mountain here is not her welcome. It is the sentence that says the sting is proof of what kind of person you are, and Jesus said a mountain is spoken to. So speak to it, and leave the outcome to Him. He deals with His own in His own way and at His own pace.

  1. Welcome she got and I never did, you are real and you took nothing off me. Matthew 20 has the owner coming out to the man who was stung and calling him friend, and friend is not a word anybody uses on somebody they are finished with.
  2. Shame at what I felt by the cake, you do not get the last word on me, and I put you down in the name of Jesus. It is written that he was called friend in the middle of the complaint, and the Holy Spirit is the one who walked me back into the room instead of out of it.
  3. Father, everything You have has been mine the whole time I stood there counting somebody else's. I thank You, because it is written that You come out to the one in the yard and call him friend before You explain anything, and Your Spirit is why I can say her name without a verdict on the end of it. Nothing was taken off me, and I am going in.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
