Dusk on the Five-Bar Gate

She shuts the last gate at the top of the lane and does not go in.

It has been a good day. That is worth saying, because it is true and because it is the part that makes tonight strange. Everything on the list is done and most of it is done well. The kit is put away. The load went out on time. Somebody rang to say thank you and meant it.

She leans on the top bar the way she has leaned on it for years, boot up on the second rail, and waits for the thing that always happens next.

Because this is how it has worked. Whatever the week has been carrying, the work closes over the top of it. You go at it hard and you go at it long, and by the time you are standing at this gate with the light going the color it goes, the day has covered the thing over and you can go in and sleep. It has never once failed. It is not a trick and it is not a lie; it genuinely works, the way a good tool genuinely works.

Tonight it does not close over.

She stands there and gives it a minute, the way you give an engine a minute. The rooks are going over toward the wood. The lamp comes on in the yard behind her on its timer. And the day is stacked up neatly behind her and none of it has covered anything, and what is underneath is exactly where it was this morning, and it is looking straight back at her.

She does not cry and nothing dramatic happens. She just understands, standing at a gate at dusk with her boot on the rail, that the thing she has been going to is not doing anything for her any more.

You know this hour. Yours may not be work at all. It may be a screen, a person, a routine, a project, the radio on in an empty house. I do not need to know which, and I am not going to guess. What I know is the flatness, and that you are standing at a gate somewhere tonight with it looking straight back at you.

Nothing was ever rated for that load

I build things, so let me give you the language I actually think in, because I think it will do you more good than a sermon on this one.

Everything that holds weight has a rating. A beam, a chain, a hook, an axle: somebody worked out what it can carry, and the number is real, and the thing is not bad for having a number. A chain rated for two tons is an excellent chain. It is only in trouble when you ask it for four.

The thing you went to is like that. It was not evil and it was not stupid. It had a rating, and inside its rating it did exactly what it was made to do, for a long time, and it did it well enough that you stopped noticing you were leaning. And then somewhere along the way the load you were putting on it stopped being the load it was rated for, and tonight it has told you so, plainly, at a gate, in the dark.

You are not standing in a failure tonight; you are standing in an honest reading. I am not softening that for you. Scripture says the same thing about every created thing under the sun, that it wears out like a garment, Psalm 102:26, and it is the Holy Spirit who arranged for you to find this out at a gate at dusk rather than somewhere that would cost you more.

And I want to say clearly what I am not doing. I am not asking you what it was. I am not going to hand you a name for it and I am not going to hand you a reason for how you got here. That is a conversation for a court, and this is a lane at dusk, and there is no court sitting.

A portion is ground, not a tank

Now the word I want you to have, and it comes from a man who was closer to the edge than he liked to admit in public.

My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever.Psalm 73:26

Read the first half honestly, because he did. My flesh and my heart fail. He is not pretending. He is standing at his own gate. And then he says the word that a farmer ought to hear differently than anybody else: portion.

A portion is not a tank and it is not a supply. A portion is ground. It is the piece of the country that was given to you, that you live off, that feeds you this year and the year after that and is still there when you are old. Nobody drains a portion. You go out on it in the morning and it is there.

You have a portion, and it is God Himself, and it is not a thing you drew down while you were leaning on something else. That is written in Psalm 73 by a man whose heart was failing while he wrote it, and it is the Holy Spirit who is putting the deed in front of you at the exact hour the other thing went flat.

That is the difference nobody tells you. What went flat was a supply, and supplies run out; that is not a fault in them, it is the definition of them. What He is is ground. You do not run a portion down. You stand on it.

Turn at the gate, and do not go looking

Here is the practical part, and it matters tonight more than it will matter tomorrow.

The danger at this hour is not despair. The danger is shopping. A person standing at a gate with the flatness looking back at them will nearly always go looking for a better version of the same thing, something with a bigger rating, and they will find one, and it will work for a while, and they will be back at this gate in a different year with the same face.

So do not go looking. Turn.

You are one turn away, right where your boots are, and the turn is a direction and not a journey. Scripture says the father saw him a great way off and ran, Luke 15:20, which means the distance was closed from the other end while the son was still walking; and the Holy Spirit is the one who moved you to read this at the exact hour it stopped working, which is not an accident and is not a small thing.

You do not have to go in first. You do not have to be over it. Turning is a thing a body does in about a second, at a gate, in the dark, with the yard lamp on.
