The alarm goes at twenty to five and he does not need it, because he has been awake since four with the day sitting on his chest.
He puts the board on the roof rack in the dark and drives out along the coast road with the window down and the heater on, the way he always does, past the campground and the closed café and down the lane to the point. He knows this road the way you know a stair in your own house.
There is a particular thing that happens when he paddles out. Everything in his head goes quiet. Not solved. Quiet. He has been doing it since he was fifteen and it has never once failed to work, and last night, lying there at four in the morning with all of it going round, the one thing he had was this. Get to the water. It will do what it does.
He comes over the rise and the sea is glass.
Flat to the horizon. Not a line of swell anywhere, the surface like a sheet of tin under a sky going pink at the edge, and two gulls standing on it, more or less, where the sandbar is.
He sits in the car for a while with the engine off. Then he gets out anyway and walks down and sits on the dry sand with his forearms on his knees, and looks at the nothing, and the thing in his head that was supposed to go quiet does not go quiet.
He is not angry about it. That is what surprises him. He is just sitting there at ten past six with the one reliable thing in his life doing nothing at all, and there is a lot of morning left.
You have a version of this. Everyone does, and yours is nothing like his, and this is the morning it did not deliver.

It was doing something real
I am not going to insult the thing that went flat on you this morning.
It worked. That is the first honest word here. Whatever it is, and I do not need to know, it did a real job for a long time and it did it reliably, and people who talk about these things as though they were nothing but a failure of character have never had one. Yours emptied your head. Yours got you to sleep. Yours gave you the one hour where nobody wanted anything. That is not a small service.
And it was never built to hold what has been getting put into it. That is not an accusation, it is a description of capacity. A thing that quiets the head is a fine thing for quieting the head. It was never a place to put a life, and it never claimed to be, and the morning it goes flat is not the morning it betrayed you. It is the morning you can see the size of it.
You are looking at an honest limit this morning and not at a personal failure, and the difference matters because one of them has a door in it. I say that standing on the word rather than over it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is holding you steady enough on that sand to think about it at all instead of getting straight back in the car.
Water that always leaves you thirsty again
There is a conversation in the gospel of John that happens beside a well at the hottest hour of the day, and the whole thing turns on the difference between two kinds of water.
Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: but whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.John 4:13-14
Look at what He does not say. He does not say the well is bad. It is a good well. It is Jacob's well, it is famous, and the water in it is real water and it works. He says it leaves you thirsty again, which is not a criticism of the well, it is a fact about what a well can do.
That is the whole of it. Your thing was a well. It gave what a well gives, and it gave it honestly, and the coming back is built into it. Then He says something about the water He gives, and the word to sit with is where it ends up. In him. A spring on the inside, which is the one kind of water that cannot go flat, because it is not weather and it is not out there and it does not depend on the swell.
You have a spring of that water in you already because you are in Christ, and a spring does not run out on the morning you need it. John 4:14 is where that stands, and the Holy Spirit is the one Jesus later names as what that living water was about, so this is not poetry, it is the arrangement.
The turn is one movement, and it happens where you are
Here is the practical part, and it is smaller than it sounds.
Nobody has to get up off that sand and go somewhere. The turn in this category is not a journey and it is not a program. In the gospels people turn where they stand, in a boat, at a table, up a tree, on a road, and the turning is a movement of the body and the mouth in the place where the thing stopped working.
That matters this morning, because the temptation on a flat sea is to wait. To go home, get through the day, and come back when there is swell, and deal with all of it some other time when the usual arrangement is functioning again. But the hour it stopped working is the hour with the opening in it, and the opening does not require you to feel anything in particular first.
You have the standing to turn your body right now and say one sentence toward God, and the standing is Christ's and given to you rather than earned by a good week. Scripture never once makes a person qualify before they turn, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has kept you sitting on the sand this long instead of driving off.
So here is where the ground goes solid.
What you went to has run out this morning, and God has not, and those two facts are standing in the same hour on purpose. Not as a lesson being taught to you. Not as something withdrawn to get your attention. Simply as the moment when the size of the one and the size of the other are both visible at once, and a person can see them and turn.
You are not far, you are found, and the finding was His work long before the water went flat. John 4 says the water He gives becomes a spring inside a person, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been that spring in you through every morning you drove out to the point without a word to Him.
And nothing about turning now is opportunism. A person who turns when the substitute fails is not gaming God. That is exactly the hour the door was cut for.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, on the sand, in the car, wherever the flat morning found you. You are in Christ and that is the whole basis for speaking: the authority is His and it has been given, not accumulated by good behavior. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries them; these are not the right words in the right order, and nothing here works because it was said correctly. The mountain is not the thing that went flat. It is the idea that turning at the hour it failed is somehow a cheaper turn. Speak to that, and leave the rest to God, because what the coming weeks hold belongs to Him and is not a test you are sitting.
- Morning that gave me nothing, you are honest and you are not my enemy. John 4 says the water we keep going back to leaves us thirsty again, and the well I am turning toward has never once been dry.
- Fear that I only turn to God when everything else stops working, you have no authority at this door, and I put you down in the name of Jesus. It is written that the one who comes to Him is in no wise cast out, and the Holy Spirit is the one who turned my head at the exact hour the water went flat.
- Lord, You are the spring that does not go flat, and You were running in me while I was driving out to the point. I thank You, because it is written that the water You give becomes a well inside a person, and Your Spirit is the one who brought me around on the sand to face You. What I went to has run out and You have not, and I am turned toward You now.
