Turning HomewardJeremiah 31:3

Nothing to Report

This message is for the care assistant on nights who writes nothing to report at the end of her shift notes, looks at the phrase in the break room with her tea gone cold, and finds she cannot think of one thing she has said to God either, with no reason for it anywhere

Half past three, and the break room still smells of the toast somebody made an hour ago.

She has twenty minutes. She has made the tea and set it down beside a newspaper that has been on the table since Tuesday, and she has touched neither. Down the corridor a call bell sounds once and stops. The fridge hums. The kettle ticks as it cools.

She is good at this. Twelve years of nights. She knows which residents wake at four, and which of them want the landing light left on, and how to hold a hand so that it does not feel like being held down.

Her shift notes are open on her knee, and under the last name she has written the phrase she writes most nights. Nothing to report.

She reads it twice. It is accurate. Nobody fell. Nobody spiked a temperature. It was a quiet night, and quiet is the entire aim of the job.

And then the phrase turns in her hand and points somewhere else, and she cannot bring to mind one thing she has said to God that was not about a resident. Not this season. Not the last one. Nothing to report there either, and not because it went badly. Because nothing happened at all.

There was no falling out. There was no morning she decided anything. She would say every word of it out loud at the handover if anyone asked her. She simply stopped speaking to Him about small things, and then it had been a while, and then it had been longer, and tonight there is a cold cup beside a paper she was never going to open.

The call bell goes again, twice this time. She stands up.

You are the one with the cold cup. You believe all of it, and there is a distance you cannot account for, and lately the fact that you cannot account for it has become the heaviest part of the whole thing, because you feel you ought to turn up with a reason and you have not got one to bring.

Nothing to Report

A quiet page is what care looks like from the inside

Ask anyone who works nights what the phrase actually means. Nothing to report does not mean nothing happened. It means the turning got done and the water was changed and the light was left on at the top of the stairs, and the woman in room four was talked back to sleep at two, and none of it needed writing down, because none of it went wrong. The page is quiet because the care was steady. A blank line in a night book is the sound of somebody being looked after all the way through the dark.

Now turn that around, because the same blank has been read backwards for a long time now.

The stretch behind you has nothing written under it. No collapse, no crisis, no night on the floor, and somewhere in there the emptiness of the record started to feel like a verdict on the whole season: that nothing was going on, that He shut the book somewhere around the point the mentioning stopped. That is not what a quiet page means. Not on your ward, and not in your life.

Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee.Jeremiah 31:3

Everlasting is the word to stand still on. Not long. Not patient. Everlasting, which means the love never started, which means there is no date on any calendar where it began and no date where it could have lapsed. And then read what a love like that does with itself. Therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee. Drawn. A steady pull, going on the whole time, in the dark, unreported.

You have been drawn through every one of those quiet nights, and the drawing was His work and not your noticing of it. That is not my warmth talking. It is written in Jeremiah 31, and the Holy Spirit has kept that same pull alive underneath everything that filled the hours, which is precisely why the phrase turned in her hand at half past three and why it is turning in yours now.

The distance with nothing written under it

Here is the part that has actually been stopping you, and it is worth saying plainly, because it usually goes unsaid in the people who carry it.

It is not really guilt. There is a little of that, but guilt is not the weight. The weight is that the distance has no shape. The stories that make good telling all have a wreck in the middle and a floor to hit, and this one has none of that, so somewhere along the way it got settled that a distance without an account behind it is a distance nobody has the standing to close. First there would have to be an explanation. And there is not one, because there is nothing there to explain, so a good person sits with a cold cup and a mouth that has gone out of the habit of opening toward Him about anything ordinary.

Look at the verse again. There is no interview anywhere in it. He does not say, once thou hast accounted for the gap, then I will draw thee. He gives the reason for the drawing before anybody asks Him for it, and the reason is His own everlasting love, which was already running long before the quiet started and which never once required a version of events.

You are received tonight without an account of yourself, and nothing about the receiving is waiting on one. I am not inventing that over you. Jeremiah 31 puts the reason in God and not in the one being drawn, and it is His Spirit doing the drawing at this hour, in a break room, over somebody with nothing to say for herself. The nothing was never the obstacle. The nothing was never the price.

The turn is one sentence, and you already know how to do it

Watch what happens on a ward when a bell goes.

Nobody composes anything. Nobody rehearses on the way down the corridor. The cup goes down and the feet go, and she is through the door before she has decided what to say, because the going is the answer and the words arrive when she gets there. Twelve years have trained that into her legs.

That is the shape of the turn back, and it is far smaller than the drift ever was. The drift took a long time because it happened a night at a time and nothing marked it. The turn takes no time at all. There is no walk back through every month that got crossed. There is no summary owed at the door. Scripture never once shows God requiring the summary, and any voice insisting the account comes first is not the voice that has been drawing you.

You have the standing to speak to Him before this shift ends, and it is standing given to you in Christ rather than built up by you across the quiet. That is what the written word says about anyone in Him, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries a sentence like that the whole distance, which is a distance He has already crossed from the other side.

The breakthrough

So put the cup down.

You are being drawn, right now, and the drawing has been going on through every unreported hour of it. That is the written word of God over you and not my reading of your situation, and it is His Spirit who has kept the small unease alive all this time, so that a woman with her head down in the work would one day look up at a phrase in her own handwriting and hear what it was really saying. He does the drawing. He has always done the drawing. It never once depended on being noticed.

The distance took a long time because it was made of small nights. The turn is one sentence, and it is smaller than that.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, with your head up. You are in Christ, and being in Him is the whole of your standing to speak; the authority is His, and it has been given to you rather than assembled by you over the years that went quiet. Jeremiah 31 is the ground under the words and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries them, so nothing here is a technique, and getting the phrasing right is not what draws anybody. The mountain is not the quiet stretch. It is the sentence that says a distance with nothing written under it cannot be closed until something is, and Jesus said a mountain is spoken to. So speak to it, and leave the outcome to Him. He draws His own in His own way and at His own pace.

  1. Nothing to report, you are the truth about the shift and you are a lie about me. Jeremiah 31 says He drew me with lovingkindness, and a love that never started never once needed the middle explained.
  2. Reason I keep hunting for, you are not the door and you were never the key, and I put you down in the name of Jesus. It is written that He drew me first, and the Holy Spirit is the hand at my back, not a voice at a desk asking me what happened.
  3. Lord, You have been drawing me through every quiet night I never once mentioned it. I thank You, because it is written that You love with an everlasting love, and Your Spirit kept the small unease alive in me until I looked up. The finding was Yours long before it was ever mine to notice.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
