Both Ends of the Same Tuesday

This message is for the mother doing both ends of the school run on the Tuesday after she meant it, finding the alarm, the missing shoe, the same corner and the same traffic entirely unchanged, and quietly beginning to suspect that an ordinary morning is evidence yesterday did not take

The alarm goes at ten to seven and Trina lies there for the four minutes she always lies there and then gets up.

Yesterday she meant it. That is the thing sitting underneath this whole morning. Yesterday, at the kitchen table with a cup going cold beside her, she said something to God and she meant every syllable of it, and she was not performing and there was nobody in the room.

Today the small one cannot find the left shoe.

It is under the couch, where it lives. The bread is the end piece, so the sandwich is the end piece, and there is going to be a conversation about that later. The big one wants to know if she signed the form and she has not signed the form. She signs the form standing up, against the fridge, with a pen that barely works.

Out the door at twenty past. Same corner. Same crossing guard with the same raised hand and the same nod. Same stretch of road where it always backs up, same two songs on the radio, same drop off, same wave, same walk back to the car past the same fence.

And then the whole day, and then the other end of it at three, and the same everything again in reverse.

She is not disappointed exactly. She would not put it that strongly, and she would be embarrassed to say the word out loud to anybody. It is quieter than disappointment. It is a small flat question sitting at the back of the morning, and the question is: if yesterday was as real as it felt, why is nothing different?

Nothing is. Not the traffic, not the shoe, not the fridge, not her.

She gets in the car at ten past three for the second run and sits with the keys in the ignition for a second, and the question is still there.

You are the one with the keys and the small flat question. You meant it, and this morning looked exactly like every other morning, and something in you has already started building a case out of that.

Both Ends of the Same Tuesday

An unchanged morning was never the test

Let me go straight at the case that has been assembling itself since twenty past seven, because it is being built out of the wrong material.

The case says: a real thing would have shown. Something in the room would be different, or something in me would be, and since neither is, the thing was probably not what I thought it was. That is the argument, and it sounds reasonable, and it is running on an assumption nobody ever checked. The assumption is that a genuine return has visible weather attached to it.

It does not. Yesterday at the kitchen table something was settled between you and God, and settled things very rarely announce themselves the next morning. A settlement is quiet by nature. It changes the standing, not the scenery.

You are home right now, in a Tuesday that looks like every other Tuesday, and nothing about the sameness has any power to undo what was settled. That is not me being encouraging. Deuteronomy 6 is the ground of it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who was at that table with you yesterday and is in this car with you today, and He has not changed His position between the two.

Hear the difference between two things that feel identical from the inside. Feeling nothing this morning is not the same as nothing having happened yesterday. One is a report about the weather. The other is a claim about the deed, and the weather has never been qualified to speak about the deed.

You have not been given a probation period, and no morning is grading you. It is written that His mercies are new every morning, which means the new thing arriving today is His faithfulness and not your evidence, and His Spirit is not out there waiting to see whether you can keep it up.

When thou walkest by the way

Here is the verse, and I want you to notice where God chose to put the talking.

And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.Deuteronomy 6:7

Read the four locations again, because they are the whole answer to your morning. Sitting in the house. Walking by the way. Lying down. Rising up. That is a Tuesday. That is precisely and exactly a Tuesday, described by God, and He is the one who put the talking there.

He did not locate it in a retreat. He did not locate it in a good week or in the sort of morning where something feels different. He put it in the getting up, the going along the road, the sitting down at home, the lying down at night. The ordinary day is not the place where the spiritual life is hard to find. The ordinary day is the venue God chose, and He chose it on purpose, and He chose it because it is the only place any of us actually live.

And walkest by the way is a commute. It has always been a commute. Somebody walking from one place to another with their mind half on the road, which this morning was a corner, a crossing guard, and a stretch that always backs up.

You have a God who put your appointment inside the school run, and He did that before you were born. Deuteronomy 6 is where it stands written and I am only reading it to you, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a settled matter warm inside a person all the way through an unremarkable week.

This is yours and it is finished: the ordinary day is not the gap between the real moments. It is written that He is with you when you rise and when you go along the road, and the Spirit of God did not come to your kitchen for a visit yesterday and go home again overnight.

Pick the place before you need it

Now the practical thing, and it is the only work in this article.

Do not try to be more spiritual today. That is not a plan, it is a mood, and moods are exactly what this morning has already proved unreliable. Do something smaller and much sturdier: pick a place in the day, in advance, before you need it, and make it the place where something gets said to God.

Not a time of day, which moves. A place, or a moment with a shape, which does not. The stretch of road where it always backs up. The walk back to the car past the fence. The four minutes between the alarm and getting up, which you already have and are already using for nothing. The second the front door closes behind everybody.

Choose one. Say it out loud to yourself so it is real, and then that is the appointment, and it does not have to feel like anything at all when you keep it.

Because here is what a chosen place does. It takes the whole weight off how you feel, which is the weight that broke this morning. You are not going to be checking your temperature for evidence any more. You are just going to be at the corner, or the fence, or the four minutes, and you are going to say something, and that is the whole of it.

You have the standing to keep an appointment like that starting today, and it is not a standing that a better morning would have earned you. Deuteronomy 6 puts the words in the walking, and the Holy Spirit is the one who meets a person at a fence they picked out on a Tuesday.

The breakthrough

You have been reading an ordinary Tuesday as a verdict on yesterday, and it is not qualified to be one.

Set the case down. You are home, and yesterday was real, and today is where it lives. Deuteronomy 6 says the talking belongs in the rising and the walking and the sitting and the lying down, and it is the Holy Spirit who has stayed in the car through both ends of this school run, unchanged, from the kitchen table straight through the shoe under the couch.

Nothing about this morning was evidence. The sameness is not a sign; it is a Tuesday. And God put your whole life with Him inside Tuesdays on purpose, so that a woman with a form to sign against the fridge would never have to go anywhere special to find Him.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, in the car, at the corner, in the four minutes. You are in Christ, and that is where the standing to speak comes from; the authority is His and it has been given to you, not earned by you in a morning that went better. Deuteronomy 6 is the ground under your feet and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries what you say, so these are not a technique and the feeling that does or does not arrive is not what moves anything. The mountain here is not the ordinariness. It is the sentence that says an unchanged Tuesday overturns a settled yesterday. Speak to that, and leave the outcome to Him, because how the coming weeks feel is His to decide in His own way and not an examination you are sitting.

  1. Tuesday that looks exactly like Monday, you are real and you are not a verdict on yesterday. Deuteronomy 6 puts the talking in the walking by the way, and this road with the crossing guard on it is the way.
  2. Charge that yesterday did not take, you are overruled, and I put you out in the name of Jesus. It is written that His mercies are new every morning, and the Holy Spirit who was at the table with me yesterday is in the car with me today and has not moved.
  3. Father, You met me yesterday and You are in this ordinary Tuesday with me, and nothing about its sameness undoes what was settled. I thank You, because Scripture says to speak of You when I rise and when I walk by the way, and I have picked my place in the day and that is where I am talking to You.
