Twenty to seven on the Monday, and the same three recycling bins are out by the side door.
She parks where she always parks. She goes in the way she always goes in. The rota is pinned where the rota is always pinned and it says exactly what it said a fortnight ago, because it is the same rota, because the shifts do not know anything has happened.
Yesterday, in this car, she said it. Out loud. Nine words, maybe ten, nothing clever, and she meant every one of them. She sat afterwards with her hands on the wheel and did not know what to do next, so she went in and made the dinner and watched something and went to bed.
Handover is at seven and it takes eleven minutes. Same three names on the board that were there Friday. Same trolley with the wheel that pulls left. Same tea round, same order, same woman in room two who wants hers weak and will send it back if it is not.
And all morning she is doing a thing she is faintly embarrassed about, which is checking. The way you press a tooth to see whether it still hurts. She keeps quietly touching the place where yesterday happened, expecting to find something different there.
There is nothing different there. She feels exactly the way she felt on Friday.
By half nine the thought has formed properly and she cannot un-form it. Maybe it did not take.
She takes room two her tea and does not wait to be told it is weak.
You are the one with the trolley. You meant it yesterday, and this morning is the same morning, and there is a suspicion working away under everything you are doing, which is that a real thing would have shown up somewhere by now.

Hidden things do not show, and that is the design
There is a verse that answers your Monday so exactly that most people read it and never notice it has just done so.
Paul is writing to a church about what happened to them and where it now lives, and he uses a verb that decides this whole question. Not sealed. Not pending. Not on display.
For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.Colossians 3:3
Hid. Your life, the real one, the part that actually moved yesterday in a parked car, is deliberately kept somewhere. It is not stored in your feelings, it is not written on your face, and it has not been filed anywhere a Monday morning can get at it. It is with Christ, in God, which is the safest place named in the whole of Scripture and also the least visible from a ward corridor.
So run your morning through that. You have been searching a place the verse says it is not, and finding nothing, and reading the nothing as a result. A hidden thing failing to show is not a hidden thing failing. It is a hidden thing doing precisely what the word says it does.
You are held somewhere your Monday cannot reach, and the holding is not measured by what this morning feels like. That is not my optimism talking. It is written in Colossians 3, and the Holy Spirit is the one keeping that life exactly where Paul says it is kept, which is why the corridor has no opinion on the matter.
The pressing of the tooth
Now the thing that has been going on all morning, and it deserves gentleness, because it is not a fault.
Checking is what a person does when something mattered. Nobody presses a tooth they do not care about. The reflex that embarrasses you slightly is actually evidence of how much yesterday meant, and it is the most understandable thing in the world, and it will also tell you nothing, because the instrument is wrong. The reading is being taken with feelings, and feelings are honest reporters of the room temperature and know nothing whatever about what is hid with Christ in God.
This is the point where a certain kind of teaching gets cruel, and it will not happen here. Nothing about yesterday is being reassessed on the strength of your Monday. There is no threshold of feeling you failed to reach and no emotional receipt anybody is waiting for you to produce. The one who felt nothing this morning has received exactly as much as the one who wept.
You have not lost anything overnight, and nothing about a flat Monday reaches back and undoes what was settled in that car. I am not inventing that over you. Colossians 3 puts the life beyond the reach of a morning by hiding it in God Himself, and it is His Spirit who has been quietly with you since twenty to seven, which is why you are still thinking about this instead of shrugging it off.
An ordinary day is not the obstacle, it is the address
Here is the turn, and it is the whole reason this category exists.
The same rota is not the enemy of what happened yesterday. It is where what happened yesterday is going to be lived, because that is where you actually are. The chapter Paul writes next is not about mountaintops. It is about how ordinary people speak and work and bear with each other on a Tuesday, and it comes immediately after the verse about hiddenness, in that order, on purpose. Hidden life, ordinary week, and no gap between the two.
So the sameness of your morning is not a verdict on your return. It is the address your return has been delivered to. And the way it gets lived is not by watching for changes but by putting something small and repeatable into a day that repeats anyway.
You have the standing to speak to God in the middle of an ordinary shift, and the standing is yours in Christ rather than earned by a morning that finally felt like something. That is what the written word says about anybody in Him, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries a sentence out of a corridor as readily as out of a cathedral.
So stop pressing the tooth.
You are hid with Christ in God, right now, on an ordinary Monday, and that is a location and not a feeling. That is the written word of God over you and not my reading of your shift, and it is His Spirit who has kept the whole thing safe since the moment you spoke in that car, which is why a morning that looks like every other morning has no power to reverse it. Yesterday was not a mood. It was a real thing put somewhere real, and the somewhere is not your Monday.
The rota did not change. Neither did what God settled while you sat with your hands on the wheel.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud somewhere on your shift. You are in Christ, and being in Him is the whole of your standing to speak; the authority is His, and it has been given to you rather than confirmed by how this morning felt. Colossians 3 is the ground under the words and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries them, so none of this is a technique and feeling it is not the qualification. The mountain here is not the sameness of your week. It is the sentence that reads an unchanged Monday as proof that nothing happened, and Jesus said a mountain is spoken to. So speak to it, and leave the outcome to Him. He grows His own in His own way and at His own pace.
- Monday that looks exactly like Friday, you are ordinary and you are not the evidence. Colossians 3 says my life is hid with Christ in God, and a hidden thing not showing is the verse working rather than the thing failing.
- Suspicion that it did not take, you are reading a corridor and calling it a verdict, and I put you down in the name of Jesus. It is written that my life is kept with Christ in God, and the Holy Spirit is the one holding it there, not my morning and not my mood.
- Lord, what I said in the car yesterday stands, and this Monday is where it gets lived. I thank You, because it is written that my life is hid with Christ in God, and Your Spirit is what got me out of the car at twenty to seven with nothing at all to show for it. The rota did not change, and neither did what You settled.
