The back door sticks in the damp and you have to lift it, and the kitchen at seven in the morning is cold in the way that only a room full of steel can be cold.
He puts the lights on down the row and they come up one bank at a time with that little tick. He puts the radio on. Same station. Same two presenters doing the same bit about the traffic that they do every single morning, and one of them laughs at the other one's joke the way she always does.
Apron. Blue handled knife with the tape round it that he has had for years and would fight somebody over. Board down, cloth under it so it does not slide.
Case of onions. Forty minutes.
Something happened last night. He would not know how to tell you about it and he is not going to try. He said one sentence out loud, in his own kitchen, standing up, and he meant it, and that was the whole of it and then he went to bed.
And this morning it is the same door that sticks, the same tick in the lights, the same presenters, the same knife, the same onions. He gets through the first four waiting for something, without admitting to himself that he is waiting, and nothing arrives. The onions do exactly what onions do. His eyes go, which is the onions and nothing else, and he wipes them on the back of his wrist and keeps going.
Somewhere around the fifth one the thought turns up, quiet and reasonable, the way the bad ones always are.
Maybe it did not take.
You know this morning. Yours might be a bus at ten past six, a desk, a kettle, a school run. You meant it. You genuinely meant it. And then the alarm went off and the day started being exactly the same day it was going to be anyway, and something in you has started reading that as a verdict.

Nothing was supposed to be different this morning
I want to go straight at the thing, because leaving it sitting there does damage all day.
There is a church in the New Testament full of people asking Paul a version of your exact question. They had come to Christ, really and properly, and now they wanted to know what should change about their situation. Should a man's status change. Should his household change. Should his work change. Underneath all of it is the assumption that a real thing with God must show up as a different set of circumstances, or it was not a real thing.
Paul answers them three times in one chapter, and the answer is not the one anybody was hoping for.
Brethren, let every man, wherein he is called, therein abide with God.1 Corinthians 7:24
Abide is the staying word. Remain. Stay put. And look at where he tells them to stay: wherein he is called, which means in the situation they were standing in when God met them. Not a better one. Not a spiritual one. That one.
And then the two words that carry the whole chapter: with God.
The design was never a different kitchen. The design was this kitchen, with God in it, which is a thing that will look from the outside precisely like a man cutting onions.
You are home in an ordinary week, and the ordinariness of it is the shape the thing was always meant to take. That is not me making the best of your Monday. It is written in 1 Corinthians 7:24 in the form of an instruction, given three times to people who wanted a change of scenery as proof, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is in that cold room with you at seven, which is the only part of the arrangement that was ever going to be invisible.
Hidden is where it was put
Now the fear underneath, which is sharper than the disappointment and needs answering directly.
The fear is not that the morning is dull. The fear is that the morning is evidence. That if last night had really landed, something today would show it, and since nothing does, the honest conclusion is that you got carried away in a warm moment and it did not take.
So look at where Paul says your life currently is.
For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.Colossians 3:3
Hid. Hidden. Concealed. That is not an accident and it is not a complaint. It is the reported location of the thing, and it was put there, deliberately, by God, in the safest place in existence.
Which means the invisibility this morning is not a failure of the transaction. It is a feature of where the transaction is being kept.
Nobody looks at a locked safe and concludes it is empty because they cannot see anything through the door.
You are hidden with Christ in God, and hidden is where He put it and not where it slipped to. Colossians 3:3 is the ground for that, and the Holy Spirit is the one holding it there, so whatever your Monday does or does not display has no bearing at all on whether yesterday was real.
And I will say the plain thing here, because this is the morning it matters most. If the flatness today has gone past flat, if the quiet voice has started saying there is no point in any of it, then tell one real person today, out loud, and let them stay with you. In the United States you can call or text 988 at any hour; anywhere else, your local emergency number or crisis line. That is not stepping away from God. That is how He has always sent help, through a person who turns up. Then come back and finish your shift.
Pick the place before you need it
Here is the practical part, and it matters more than it looks.
Do not wait for a moment that prompts you, because the whole lesson of this morning is that the moments are not going to prompt you. Tomorrow will be as unremarkable as today, and the day after that will be too, and a plan that depends on feeling something is a plan that has already failed.
So choose the place in advance. One ordinary repeating part of your day, picked now, while it is in front of you, and named.
The onions. The walk from the stop to the door. The first cup before anybody else is in. The stretch of road between the third drop and the fourth. It does not have to be quiet and it does not have to be dignified. It has to be a thing that happens whether or not the mood turns up, because the reliability of it is the entire point.
Then, when you get there, say something to God. Short. The same thing every day is fine. Better than fine.
You have a standing appointment with God in the middle of an ordinary shift, and it is yours already rather than something you are building toward. 1 Corinthians 7 says abide where you are called, and the Holy Spirit is the one who meets a person at a bench, so the arrangement is already in place and all that remains is to name the spot.
So here is what is true at the bench with a case half done.
You are home, right now, in an ordinary week, and nothing about the ordinariness of it undoes one thing that happened yesterday. 1 Corinthians 7:24 and Colossians 3:3 are the ground under that, and the Holy Spirit is the one who was there when you said it and who is here now while you get through the onions.
Your eyes went this morning and that was the onions. If they had gone for another reason, that would have been the onions too, in the sense that mattered: it would not have proved anything either. Feeling is not the receipt. There is no receipt, because there was no transaction you had to complete.
Yesterday was real. Today is where it lives. Those are two separate facts and neither one is inspecting the other.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud at the bench, or wherever your version of the bench is. The right to speak them is yours in Christ, given rather than earned, and it does not go up on a good week or down on a flat one. 1 Corinthians 7 and Colossians 3 are the ground and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries what you say, so the wording is not the mechanism and saying it well is not what settles anything. The mountain is one idea: that an unchanged morning is evidence against you. Speak to that, and leave the outcome to Him, because He answers in His own way and what the coming weeks look like is His to decide and not a test you are sitting.
- Ordinary Monday with nothing on it, you are exactly what was promised and you are not a verdict. It is written that every man should abide, right where he is, with God, and abiding is what I am doing over a case of onions.
- Fear that says it did not take, you are reading the wrong evidence, and I put you down in the name of Jesus. Colossians 3 says my life is hidden with Christ in God, and the Holy Spirit is the one holding it there, so hidden is where it was put and not where it slipped.
- Lord, yesterday was real and today is where it lives, and I am talking to You over the onions. I thank You, because 1 Corinthians 7 says to abide right where I was called and Your Spirit is here in a cold kitchen at seven in the morning, and an ordinary day is not a smaller place to be Yours.
