Nothing Different at the Sink

This message is for the man washing up after breakfast the morning after he spoke to God for the first time in a long while, checking himself for a difference the way you press a bruise, and finding the same sink, the same radio and the same lunchbox and nothing changed at all

The alarm goes at the same time it always goes. The radio comes on doing the traffic. The dog wants out and then wants back in.

He stands at the sink after everyone has gone, running the water hot the way he always does, because the tap takes a while and he is the only one in this house who waits for it.

Two bowls, a pan, the small plate with the crusts. His daughter's cup with the chip he keeps meaning to throw out.

Last night, at this sink, in the dark, he said something to God. Out loud. Not much of a sentence and he meant every word of it, and he stood here afterward with his hands in the water and something in him had gone quiet in a way it has not been quiet in a long time.

And this morning there is the pan, and the crusts, and a bill on the counter he has been walking past for a week.

He checks himself while he washes, the way you press a bruise to see if it still does it. Nothing. No difference. The kitchen is the same kitchen and he is the same man in it, and the traffic report says what it says.

He does not know what he expected. Something. And the thought comes at him sideways while he sets the pan on the rack: maybe it did not take.

He dries his hands on the towel that is always damp and stands there a second longer than he needs to.

You are the one at the sink this morning. Yesterday was real. And nothing about today looks like it, and now you are wondering whether the whole thing was just a good hour you had in a dark kitchen.

Nothing Different at the Sink

An ordinary morning is not a verdict on last night

Let me get in front of the thought before it settles, because it will settle if nobody meets it.

The thought says: if that had been real, something would be different by now. It arrives sounding like honesty. It is not honesty; it is a test that nobody in Scripture is ever put through. Not one person who came to God in the Bible was handed a checklist the next morning to prove it went through.

Look at what actually happened last night. You spoke to God, and God heard you, and the hearing does not depend on the acoustics of your kitchen or the state of your feelings while you did it. The evidence is not in your chest. It is in Him.

You are not being asked to produce a difference this morning, and the sameness of this kitchen is not evidence against anything. Scripture puts the weight on what God does and never on what a person can detect, and the Holy Spirit is the one who moved you to speak in a dark kitchen in the first place. He did not do that so He could grade you at nine the next morning.

Not by might, and not by feeling either

Here is the passage, and there is a reason I want you standing in this particular one.

Zerubbabel is rebuilding a temple, and the foundation he has laid is so plainly unimpressive that the old men who remember the first one weep when they see it. Into that, God speaks.

Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.Zechariah 4:6

That word comes to a man looking at a foundation that does not look like anything. And the promise is not that the work will look impressive tomorrow. The promise is about whose Spirit is doing it.

You have the Spirit of God at work in you this morning, and the work has never once depended on your might or your ability to feel it happening. That is Zechariah 4 and not my reassurance, and it is the same Holy Spirit named in that verse who carried what you said at this sink last night. Not by might. Not by power. Not by whether the kitchen feels different at half past eight.

That is the end of the test you have been quietly sitting this morning. There never was a test. There is a foundation, and the One building on it is not you.

The day of small things is His favorite ground

Now the line I most want in your pocket for today.

For who hath despised the day of small things?Zechariah 4:10

It is a question, and the answer sitting under it is that God does not. People do. The old men wept at a foundation because it was smaller than the one they remembered, and God looked at the same stones and said do not despise this day.

Your today is a day of small things. A pan on the rack. A bill you keep walking past. A sentence you said in the dark and cannot feel any trace of this morning. That is exactly the ground God has always worked on, and there is nothing second rate about it.

You are standing in a day God has not despised, and yesterday is not undone by a morning that looks like every other morning. That is written into Zechariah 4:10, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has kept you standing at this sink long enough to read it instead of walking off to the car with the thought unanswered. The small day is not the leftover. It is where the building actually happens.

And notice the whole passage keeps the eyes of the Lord running to and fro through the earth. He is not somewhere else this morning while your kitchen gets on with itself.

The breakthrough

The dishes are done. The towel is damp. And nothing about this morning looks like last night.

You are home this morning, in an ordinary kitchen, with no feeling in your hands, and nothing about that undoes one word of what you said. That is Zechariah 4 spoken over you as it stands, and it is the Holy Spirit carrying it and not the confidence of my saying it. Not by might. Not by power. By His Spirit, in a small day He has never despised, on a foundation He laid and is building on while you stand there wondering if it took.

It took. Not because you felt it. Because He heard it, and the hearing was never yours to verify.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud at the sink, with the towel in your hand. You are in Christ, and that is where the standing to speak comes from; it was given to you and it does not rise and fall with an ordinary morning. Zechariah 4 is the ground under every word and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries them, so none of this depends on you saying it well or feeling it as it goes. The mountain here is not the ordinary day. It is the suspicion that a morning with nothing in it proves last night did not take, and Jesus said a mountain is spoken to. So speak to it, and leave the outcome to Him, because He builds in His own way and what the coming weeks look like is His to decide and not a test you are sitting.

  1. Ordinary morning with nothing changed in it, you are real and you are not the verdict on last night. Zechariah 4:10 asks who has despised the day of small things, and the answer standing under that question is that God never has, and He is building on this exact morning.
  2. Fear that it did not take, you are not the witness God gave, and I put you down in the name of Jesus. It is written that it is not by might nor by power but by His Spirit, and the same Holy Spirit carried every word I said at this sink last night, so my hands in this water are not evidence against me.
  3. Lord, You heard me last night and this morning is where it lives. I thank You, because it is written that You do not despise the day of small things and Your Spirit is the one doing the building, and I am saying my sentence to You again right here at the sink.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
