The Drawer Where the Evenings Are

This message is for the woman who empties the kitchen drawer of receipts on a Sunday afternoon because a form wants a number, spreads them across the table, and sees the plain honest shape of where her evenings have actually been going

The form wants a number and the number is in the drawer, so on Sunday afternoon she pulls the whole drawer out and turns it over onto the kitchen table.

Receipts. Years of them, curled and faded, the ink gone off some of them entirely. A rubber band. Two dead batteries. A key that does not open anything in this house.

She starts sorting because sorting is the only way through, and she is looking for one number from one store in one month, and to find it she has to read all the others.

And this is the part she was not braced for, because there is nothing shocking here. There is no scandal in a kitchen drawer. There is a gas station on a Tuesday. There is the drive through on the way back from her mother's. There is the hardware store, twice, for the same thing. There is the movie she does not remember seeing.

What it adds up to is not a crime. It is a shape. It is where the evenings went, laid out on a table in her own handwriting and somebody else's ink, and it is honest in a way that a person cannot argue with, because a receipt has never once exaggerated.

She sits back with her hands in her lap.

She is not thinking about sin. She is thinking that if anybody asked her right now where her week actually goes, she could tell them, precisely, and she would rather nobody asked.

The kettle clicks off in the quiet behind her.

That is you at your own table with the drawer emptied out, holding a week you can describe exactly, hoping the description never has to be read aloud.

The Drawer Where the Evenings Are

The dread is about being found out, and He was never in the dark

I want to go carefully here, because this is the part of a person that gets handled roughly by people who mean well, and I am not going to do that to you.

The fear at the table is not really about the receipts. It is the older fear underneath them: that if the whole ordinary honest shape of your week were laid out where God could see it, something would change in how He regards you. That His welcome has been resting, quietly, on a version of your life that is a little tidier than the one in the drawer.

So hear the actual state of things.

Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways.Psalm 139:3

Acquainted. Not informed. Not recently updated. Acquainted is a word about long familiarity, the way you know a road you have driven a thousand times and could drive in the dark. And the two things He is said to compass are your path and your lying down, which is to say the going out and the coming home, the working hours and the hours nobody sees. That is a merism. Two poles named to say the whole of it.

You are known already, all the way down, and the knowing has never once cost you His welcome. I am not putting my own generosity over you. That is Psalm 139 as it is written, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes an old line land on a Sunday afternoon in a kitchen instead of staying a nice thought about somebody else.

Read the psalm's own reaction to it, because David is not braced either. He says the knowledge is too wonderful for him. Not too exposing. Wonderful. He is glad about the thing you are dreading, and he is glad about it because of who is doing the knowing.

Being seen is not the same as being assessed

Here is where I think it went sideways for you, and it is a small hinge with a great weight hanging on it.

Somewhere you started hearing the word seen as though it meant assessed. As though God looking at your week were a manager going down a column with a pen. And once seeing means assessing, every honest look at your own life becomes a hearing you are about to lose, so you stop looking, and then you stop coming near, because coming near feels like handing over the file.

But look at who is doing the seeing in that psalm. It is the One who formed you in secret, who knew the words on your tongue before you got to them, whose thoughts toward you outnumber the sand. That is not an auditor. That is a Father who knows your ways the way a shepherd knows which sheep goes lame on stony ground.

You are looked at by a Father and not read by an assessor, and that is your ground tonight whether or not you feel any difference in the room. It is written that His thoughts toward you are precious and beyond counting, and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying that over the table to you now.

And notice what the psalm never does. It never itemizes. God does not read David his own list back to him. There is no inventory in Psalm 139, and there is not going to be one here either, because I am not going to be the voice that hands you a page you did not arrive with. You have nothing to submit and nothing to defend, and that is finished ground, not a mood. His word says He is already acquainted with all your ways, and His Spirit is the one who kept you sitting at the table instead of sweeping the whole drawer into the trash.

He came to the honest address

One more thing and then I want to put something in your hands.

When Jesus wanted a man's company He did not send for a tidied version of him. He went to the house. He walked to the actual door of the actual life, with the actual neighbors watching, and He invited Himself in before anybody had straightened anything.

That is the pattern the whole way through. He does not summon people to a cleaner address and meet them there. He comes to the one on the paperwork.

So your drawer is not a problem for Him. It is where He knew you lived.

You are being come to, at this address, in the ordinary week you can describe exactly, and the coming is not conditional on the description improving. Scripture says He is acquainted with all your ways, and it is the same Spirit who moved over the water at the beginning who is moving in the quiet of your kitchen while a kettle cools.

The breakthrough

So the drawer is out on the table and the shape of your week is legible, and you have been treating that as the thing that has to be fixed before you can come near.

Turn that over. You are seen where you actually live, right now, and you are not being written off in the seeing. That is Psalm 139 spoken over you as it stands, and it is the Holy Spirit who has been keeping this small dread alive in you, not to convict you of a crime, but to walk you to the one place where being fully known has never once been dangerous.

The receipts were never the barrier. The hiding was, and the hiding was only ever from your own eyes, because His were never off you.

He is acquainted with all your ways. He came to that address anyway. He is at that address now.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, at the table if that is where you are. You are in Christ, and that is the whole of your standing to speak; the authority belongs to Him and has been given to you, never earned back by a tidier week. Psalm 139 is the ground under this and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries what you say, so these are not a technique and nothing here works by getting the phrasing right. The mountain is the belief that being fully known would cost you the welcome. Speak to that, and leave the rest with Him: He deals with each of His own in His own way, and what the coming weeks look like is His to decide and not a test you are sitting.

  1. Drawer full of ordinary evenings, you are honest and you are not evidence against me. Psalm 139:3 says He is acquainted with all my ways, and He was acquainted with them long before I ever laid them out on a table.
  2. Dread of being read like a file, you are put down in the name of Jesus, because the One reading me is a Father and not an assessor. It is written that His thoughts toward me are precious and past counting, and the Holy Spirit is the one who walked me to the table instead of away from it.
  3. Lord, You came to the address I actually live at, and I am opening the door instead of tidying it. I thank You, because Your word says You compass my path and my lying down, and I am seen all the way down by You and I am not written off, and I have stopped hiding a week You already knew.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
