Two Weeks in My Own Handwriting

This message is for the care worker taking the finished rota down off the fridge door on a Thursday before a late shift, reading two weeks of her own pen marks and seeing the real shape of her life laid out in one page, and bracing for the verdict she assumes arrives with being seen

Thursday, quarter past one, and she has an hour before the late shift.

The new rota came through this morning, so the finished one has to come off the fridge door to make room. She lifts the magnet, a chipped seaside thing one of the girls brought back, and the old page comes away in her hand.

She was going to bin it. She reads it instead, standing there in her coat.

It is two weeks of her own pen. The printed shifts underneath, and over the top of them everything she added herself: a swap circled twice, a long day taken because Donna's mother was poorly, the letters she uses for nights, an arrow where she moved her own break to cover a handover. In the margin, in the same biro, the things that had to fit in the gaps. Her dad's appointment. The car. Somebody's parents' evening, moved twice and then attended.

It is not a bad two weeks. That is the thing she notices first. Nobody looking at this page would think badly of the woman who wrote it. It is a person keeping a great many things upright with both hands.

And then she sees the whole of it at once, the way you sometimes see your own kitchen as a stranger would, and there is not a single line anywhere on that page where God's name goes. Not one hour with His name against it. He is not on the rota. He has not been on the rota for a long time.

She stands with the page in her hand and something in her chest ducks, the way you duck before a slap, because she has always assumed that being seen this clearly is the same event as being sentenced.

She puts the new page up under the magnet. She puts the old one in the recycling. She goes to work.

You know where your own time goes. You could account for it hour by hour if somebody made you, and that is exactly the thing you would rather not do in front of God, because the seeing and the verdict have been welded together in your mind for so long that you cannot imagine the one arriving without the other.

Two Weeks in My Own Handwriting

He was never handed the page, He was already on the road

There is a woman in Genesis who nobody expected God to go after.

She is not the promise. She is not the covenant name. She is a servant girl in somebody else's household, badly used by everybody in the story, and when it becomes unbearable she does the only thing left and runs. Genesis finds her out on the desert road to Shur, sitting by a spring of water in the middle of nowhere, with no plan past the next mile.

And God comes to her there. Not to the household. Not once she is back and behaving. To the spring on the road out, in the middle of the running, and He asks her a question so plain it barely sounds like God at all: where have you come from, and where are you going.

She tells Him the truth. Just the truth, with no repair plan attached to it. And then she does something no one else in the whole book does: she gives God a name of her own making.

And she called the name of the LORD that spake unto her, Thou God seest me.Genesis 16:13

She had just been looked at, straight through, in the worst fortnight of her life, and the name she gave the One doing the looking was not Judge. It was the God who sees me. That is the name a person gives when the seeing turned out to be the kindest thing that had ever happened to her.

You are seen exactly where you actually live, and the seeing is not a sentence being read out over you. That is not my kindness talking. It is written in Genesis 16, and it is the Holy Spirit who has brought you close enough to look at your own two weeks without running from the page, which is not something fear does to a person.

Seen and judged got welded together, and they are not the same event

Somewhere along the way those two became one thing in you. Not by argument. Nobody sat you down and taught it. It just settled, the way things settle, and now the thought of God reading your last fortnight back to you arrives with a flinch already attached.

So look at what actually happens on that road. He does not open with the household. He does not itemize what she has done or run through it in order. He asks her where she has come from and where she is going, and He lets her answer for herself. One question, and room to say the plain thing.

That is the whole shape of it, and it is why this article will never hand you a list. God does not audit. He is not gathering the last two weeks into a case. Notice that He arrives already knowing: He does not need the page off the fridge door, because He was on the road before she got to it, and He knew every mile of the way she came.

You have been known this whole time, and being known has not cost you His welcome once. I am not making that up over you. Genesis 16 shows God arriving at the spring already acquainted with everything the running was about, and the Holy Spirit is the one making that land on you now, in a kitchen, with your coat still on.

One true thing, and nothing promised after it

Here is what she does not do, and it matters more than almost anything else in the passage.

She does not promise to fix it. There is no vow at the spring. She does not tell God she will be different, she does not lay out how the next two weeks will run, and God does not ask her for any of that before He speaks to her. She says one honest thing, He answers her, and she walks off that road with a name for Him that she made up herself.

That is what honesty in front of God actually looks like, and it is far lighter than the thing you have been avoiding. Not an inventory. Not a full account of the shifts and the gaps. One true sentence, said once, out loud, with nothing promised on the end of it.

And you can say a sentence like that without waiting for a better week to say it from. Nothing in Genesis 16 suggests God met her at a convenient moment, and the Holy Spirit is not standing at the door of your kitchen waiting for the rota to change first.

You have the standing right now to say one true thing to God, and the standing is yours in Christ and not earned off the back of a good fortnight. That is the written word about anybody in Him, and His Spirit is the one who carries the sentence, so the whole weight of it is off you before you open your mouth.

The breakthrough

So take the page down and look at it, because there is nothing waiting on the other side of the looking except Him.

You are seen with love, right now, and the love is not the reward for a better page. That is the written word of God over you and not my reading of your fortnight, and it is His Spirit who has kept you standing at the fridge door long enough to notice what was missing rather than sending you off to be busy about something else. He came to a spring on the road out. He asked one question. He let her name Him for the way He looked at her.

The flinch was learned. The look was never what you thought it was.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud in your own kitchen. You are in Christ, and that is the whole of your standing to speak; the authority is His and it has been given to you, not earned off the back of two well spent weeks. Genesis 16 is the ground under the words and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries them, so none of this is a technique and getting the wording right is not what makes God look kindly at anybody. The mountain here is not the rota. It is the belief that being seen and being sentenced are one event, and Jesus said a mountain is spoken to. So speak to it, and leave the outcome to Him. He deals with His own in His own way and at His own pace.

  1. Two weeks in my own handwriting, you are accurate and you are not the verdict. Genesis 16 says God saw a woman on the road out and let her name Him for it, and accurate has never once been the same thing as condemned.
  2. Verdict I brace for whenever I am seen, you have no place in this kitchen, and I put you out in the name of Jesus. It is written that He came to the spring before she ever got herself back, and the Holy Spirit is the one who walked me to this door to look.
  3. Father, You came to the road and You never sent for a tidier version of me first. I thank You, because it is written that You are the God who sees, and Your Spirit brought me here to say one true thing out loud with nothing promised on the end of it. Being seen by You is the safest hour in my week.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
