The last client goes out at ten past six, and the bell over the door gives its two small notes, and then the salon belongs to Nadine.
She turns the sign. She stacks the chairs up onto the counter one at a time, the way she has since the first year, and she gets the broom out of the closet by the sink. There is hair everywhere. There always is on a Saturday.
The radio is still on. It stays on all day, tuned to the station the clients like, and nobody ever turns it off until the lights go out.
A song comes on. An old one, a choir arrangement of something everybody's grandmother knew, piano rolling underneath it, the kind of thing the station plays at the end of the week. Nadine sweeps in time with it without meaning to.
And then she is singing. Not the melody. The alto line. The middle part, the one nobody knows unless they stood in a section long enough for somebody to hand it to them and make them hold it while the sopranos moved.
She knows every turn of it. She knows the bar where the altos wait. She knows where the breath goes and she takes it in the right place, in an empty salon, holding a broom.
She stops. Not because it hurts. Because of how easy it was. Because that whole part came up out of her without being sent for, and she cannot remember the last thing she said to God that was not a fast please in traffic.
There was no falling out. There was no Saturday she decided. Nothing happened at all, and that is the part she has never once been able to explain to anybody, herself included.
The song ends and the ads come on. She finishes the corner by the sink, kills the radio, kills the lights, and locks the door behind her.
You are the one with the broom. The part is still in you, note for note, and there is a quiet you cannot account for, and lately not being able to account for it has become heavier than the quiet ever was.

Nothing happened, and that is the truest thing about it
I keep a watch in the middle of the night. Three in the morning, a lamp, a book with names in it, my own voice and nobody else's, and I will tell you what those hours have taught me that nobody warns you about: almost none of the names in that book have a story.
The dramatic ones are rare. What is common is the woman with the broom. A thing that was daily became weekly, and then became a thing she meant to get back to, and there was never a night it broke and never a morning she chose it. It simply went quiet. And then the quiet had been there a while, and the quiet started to look like a verdict.
So hear me before you talk yourself back out of this room. You are welcome right now, tonight, with absolutely nothing in your hands to explain yourself with. That is not my warmth talking, and it is not my opinion of you. It is how God speaks to His own in Jeremiah 31, and it is His Spirit who has kept something alive in you all this while you have been telling yourself you were nowhere.
I know what a mind does with a silence that has no author. It goes looking for one. It decides there must have been a moment, a choice, a bad season, something, because a distance you did not choose is harder to hold than a distance you did. And when it cannot find the moment, it turns around and makes you the moment. That is the sentence you have been serving, and it was never handed down by God.
You have a Father who is not conducting an investigation into how the room went quiet. It is written in this same chapter of Jeremiah that His word to His own is a word of everlasting love, and the Holy Spirit is not in you as an auditor. He is in you as the One who made you look up from the broom.
He has been drawing you the whole time
Here is the verse I want in your mouth, and I want it in your mouth before anything else gets there.
The LORD hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee.Jeremiah 31:3
Drawn. The word underneath it in the Hebrew is a pulling word. It is what you do to a rope, steadily, hand over hand, with the thing on the other end not necessarily aware that it is moving. It is not a shout across a valley. It is not a summons. It is tension on a line, kept up, year in and year out, by somebody who has hold of the other end and has not let go of it.
And look at the hinge in the middle of the sentence. Therefore. The drawing is the consequence of the love, not the consequence of your record. He does not draw the ones who came back well. He draws because He loves, the loving came first, and the word chosen for it is everlasting, which is a word with no gap in it anywhere. Not one. Not the gap you are worried about.
You have been drawn on every day of the quiet, and the drawing was never yours to begin. Jeremiah 31 says that out loud and I am only reading it to you, and the Spirit of God is the one who has had a hand on that rope this whole time, in the salon, in the car, in the long stretch you cannot put a shape on.
So what was that, tonight, with the broom? That was the rope. That was not nostalgia and it was not your conscience. Something in you moved because somebody pulled.
What stayed in you was kept there on purpose
Now the alto line. Because I do not think it has landed yet what it means that it is still in you.
You did not maintain that. It has not been rehearsed. There has been no discipline holding it in place, no practice, no early mornings, no effort of any kind. It sat in you untouched through everything, and it came back note for note the second the piano gave it room. Things do not survive like that by accident. Things survive like that because they were kept.
That is what I want you to see, and it is the reverse of what you have been reading it as. You have been reading the ease of it as evidence against yourself: look how much of it is still there, and look how little I have done with it. Turn that over. Look at it the way heaven looks at it. Somebody preserved that in you straight through the silence. Somebody kept the part warm.
You are held by a love the Scripture calls everlasting, and everlasting has no place in it where you slipped out. I am not inventing a comfort for you. Jeremiah 31 is where that word sits, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps what God has spoken alive in a person long after the person has stopped watching over it.
This is yours, and it is settled: not one thing that stayed in you was your own doing. The word says His mercies are new every morning in Lamentations 3, and His Spirit has been the keeper of the alto line while you were busy, while you were tired, while you were fine, while you were nowhere in particular. He kept it. He kept you. He is not now going to ask for the receipts.
You have been waiting to find the reason before you were allowed to come near.
Put it down. There is no reason, He is not asking for one, and the searching was never a condition He set. You are drawn tonight, and you were drawn all through the quiet, and the drawing is the finished work of a love Scripture calls everlasting. That is Jeremiah 31 spoken over you as it stands, and it is the Holy Spirit who put a stop in your hands mid bar so that a woman who thought she was nowhere would hear how much of it was still in her.
The quiet was long because it was made of nothing. The drawing was longer, and it was made of Him.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, in the salon, in the car, in the kitchen with the tap running. You are in Christ, and that is what gives you the standing to speak at all; the authority is His and it has been given to you, not assembled by you out of good years. Jeremiah 31 is the ground you are standing on and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries what you say, so the words are not a technique and getting them elegant is not what moves anything. The mountain here is not the quiet. It is the sentence that says a silence with no cause cannot be broken without one. Speak to that, and leave the outcome to Him, because how the coming weeks sound is His to decide in His own way and not a test you are sitting.
- Silence that came without a single reason, you are real and you are thin. Jeremiah 31 says He drew me with lovingkindness, and He had hold of the rope the whole time I thought there was nobody on the other end of it.
- Verdict I read off my own quiet, you are not my name and you never were, and I put you down in the name of Jesus. It is written that His love is everlasting, and the Holy Spirit is the one who kept the part warm in me while I was nowhere in particular.
- Lord, You kept the harmony in me and You have been drawing me every day of the silence. I thank You, because Scripture says You loved me with an everlasting love, and tonight I am singing to You out loud instead of about You.
