Turning HomewardJeremiah 31:3

The Till Counted Twice

This message is for the shopkeeper ducking out under a half closed shutter with the float bag under his arm, hearing his own voice say thank You out of nowhere, and finding that he cannot locate the week he stopped speaking to God about anything ordinary

The shutter comes down to the height of his shoulder and stops there, because the man from the apartment above the laundromat has not come for his bread yet.

Nabil counts the till. Coins into the tray by size, notes squared and all facing the same way, and the total lands a few cents short, so he counts it again. The second count comes out right. It always does.

Behind him the shop is doing what a shop does at this hour. The fridge motor. The fan over the door. The open sacks by the counter breathing out cumin and cardamom and the dry sweet dust that comes off a box of dates. He carries the last tray of figs into the cold and stacks the empty crates by the back step for the morning.

He wipes the counter down. He turns the radio lower without turning it off. He folds the float into the blue bag and tucks it under his arm.

And ducking out under the half shutter into a street gone gold, he hears his own voice say thank You. Two words. Nothing in front of them and nothing after them.

He stops in the doorway. Not because the words were strange. Because they were not. He would have said them every night once, over the till and the crates and the man who always comes late for bread.

He straightens up. He believes every single thing he has ever believed. He could pray this minute for his sister's boy, for the woman who buys the small bag of rice on Fridays, for anybody who stood at that counter and asked him to. And he cannot find the week it went quiet. There was no argument. Nothing was decided. The shop stayed open, the till still gets counted twice, and somewhere inside all that ordinary trading he simply stopped saying ordinary things to God.

You are the one under the shutter with the bag under your arm, and the two words surprised you too.

The Till Counted Twice

Nobody in a spice shop can smell the spices

I have stood in shops like his all my life, and there is a thing every trader knows that no customer believes. The man who works among the sacks cannot smell them. Cumin, cardamom, the dark sweet dust off a box of dates: a stranger opens the door and it lands on them like a room they have walked into, and the man behind the counter smells nothing at all, because he has been standing in it since morning.

That is the shape of a quiet like yours. Not a decision. Not a falling out. It happened while you stood in it, and it did not smell of anything, and then one evening you duck under a shutter and hear two words come out of your own mouth, and the air is suddenly a thing you can notice again.

I want to be careful with you here, because this is exactly where people get handed a reason they did not walk in with. I am not going to tell you why it went quiet. There was no why. A trader does not lose the smell of his own shop because of some flaw in him. He loses it because he has been standing there. That is the whole mechanism, and the absence of a reason is not a hole in your account that has to be filled before you may come near.

You are welcome tonight without an account of any kind, and that is not my warm opinion of you. It is written into Jeremiah 31, and the Holy Spirit is the one who put those two words in your mouth in the doorway before you had decided to say anything at all.

The drawing started on His side of the counter

Here is the verse this whole thing stands on. Listen for the small word in the middle of it, because the small word is the door.

Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee.Jeremiah 31:3

Therefore. The love came first, and the drawing came out of the love. It does not run the other way. It never once ran the other way. He does not say: you drew near, therefore I loved you. He says the love is everlasting, which means it has no beginning you could be late for, and then He says therefore, and then He says the drawing is His own work, done with lovingkindness, which is the covenant word, the loyalty a household keeps toward its own people without being asked.

So the thank You in the doorway was not the start of a long walk back. It was the far end of a cord that has been pulled steadily and patiently the whole time, through every till and every crate.

You have been drawn, and you are being drawn at this minute, and the drawing is His and not a distance you have to make up yourself. Hosea 11:4 says He draws with cords of a man and with bands of love, and it is the Holy Spirit who has held the other end of that cord through every quiet season, without one complaint about the silence.

That is why the shop kept feeling like a place where God was. He was there. He was working the whole time, on His side of the counter, and the working was never conditional on your commentary.

The walk back is the width of a counter

Most people picture a road. They picture the distance as the length of all the days it took to happen, and they assume the return has to be the same road walked backward, which is exactly why it never gets started.

But a customer at a counter is not far from the man serving him. He is one arm's length away, and it makes no difference whether he came in from the next street or the next country, because the counter is the same width for everybody.

But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.Ephesians 2:13

Made nigh. Finished, and done to us rather than achieved by us. Paul does not write that the far off will be brought near once they can explain the absence. He writes that they have been brought near already, by blood poured out before any of us had a word to say for ourselves.

You are near tonight, and the nearness is finished work rather than a project you have fallen behind on. Ephesians 2:13 says the bringing near is done in Christ, and the same Spirit who raised Him is the one holding you in that nearness while you read this, with nothing outstanding on your side of it.

So there is no road. There is a counter, and both of you are already standing at it, and one of you has been there the entire time.

The breakthrough

Two words in a doorway. That is what it took, and it was not even the beginning of it.

You have already been drawn, you are already brought near, and the welcome does not sit behind a reason you cannot produce. That is Jeremiah 31 and Ephesians 2 spoken over you exactly as they stand, and it is the Holy Spirit who has kept a small warmth alive in you through every silent season, so that one ordinary evening a man under a shutter would hear himself say thank You.

The quiet took a long while because it was made of ordinary days. The turn is one sentence long, and it can be said with a bag of coins under your arm.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud. You are in Christ, and being in Him is what gives you the standing to speak them; the authority is His, given to you, never assembled by you out of good seasons. Jeremiah 31 is the ground under your feet and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries what you say, so nothing here depends on the wording coming out right. The mountain in this room is not the distance. It is the idea that a quiet with no story cannot be broken without one, and Jesus taught us to speak to the mountain rather than to describe it. Speak, and leave the outcome with Him. What the coming weeks look like is His to decide and never a test you are sitting.

  1. Quiet that came without a quarrel, hear me: you are a silence and not a sentence. Jeremiah 31 says the everlasting love came first and the lovingkindness did the drawing, and the drawing was already underway while I stood there counting the till.
  2. Account I think I owe before I am allowed to speak, you are not the toll on this doorway, and I put you down in the name of Jesus. It is written that I was made nigh by the blood of Christ, and the Holy Spirit is the one who put thank You in my mouth before I had assembled a single word of explanation.
  3. Lord, You were drawing me while I was counting the till, and I am speaking to You again tonight with nothing attached to it. I thank You, because it is written that You loved me with an everlasting love, and Your Spirit brought me near before I had one thing to explain.
