The lights on the ring road go red and she is first in the line, and she has ninety minutes to herself for the first time in a week.
Her cousin gets married at six. The room is done: a hundred and forty chairs with the sashes tied the way the girl wanted them, the top table, the little jars with the greenery, the seating plan on the easel by the door. She stood in the doorway before she left and looked at it and thought, that is a good room. She has been making good rooms for this family since she was twenty-two.
Now it is the car, and the drive back, and the playlist. Same one. She built it a long time ago and it has been added to and never pruned, and it is the thing that has carried her: every setup, every clear-down at one in the morning, every drive home from a hall with her shoes off and the heating on.
She scrolls to the track. The one that always works. She knows where it opens out, three minutes and eleven seconds in, and she turns the volume up two clicks before it gets there so it hits properly.
And it comes, and it goes past, and it is sound.
That is all. Not sad. Not spoiled. Just flat, the way a thing you have eaten a thousand times can suddenly have no taste in it, and you chew it anyway and put your fork down and look at the plate.
She turns it up, because that is what you do. It gets louder. It does not get bigger.
The lights go green. Somebody behind her taps the horn, not unkindly, and she puts her hand up in the mirror and pulls away with the music going and her jaw tight.
You know that red light. Yours will not be a playlist and I am not going to guess at it. But you know the exact hour when the thing that has been carrying you set you down in the road, and you turned it up, and it got louder and it did not get bigger.

I am not going to tell you it was the cause
You are safe here, and let us be careful, because there is a wrong turn available right at the start of this and almost everybody takes it. What I have to hand you is written down and older than both of us, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a written thing from turning into an accusation on the way in.
The wrong turn is to look at the thing that has just gone flat and decide that it is the reason. That the drive, or the screen, or the job, or the person, or the quiet room with the door shut, is what took you off. It is a tidy explanation and it will be offered to you by somebody within the month. I am not offering it. I do not know that it is true, and neither do you, and a reason handed to you at this hour is a debt you did not walk in carrying.
Here is what I will say about it, and it is smaller and truer. It held weight for a while. It does not hold weight now. Those are two facts, and there is no third fact hiding underneath them with your name on it.
You are not being asked to account for the thing tonight, and it has no standing to name you. That is not me being soft; it is written all through the prophets that God addresses people at the moment a thing runs out and not at the moment they can explain it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has kept you sitting with a page instead of scrolling on.
The invitation is addressed to exactly this hour
Here is a passage that was written for people standing in a road with something flat in their hands.
Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not? hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness.Isaiah 55:2
Read the tone of it, because people misread it every time. It is not a scolding. Isaiah 55 opens with a man in a market shouting come, come, come, and he is not shouting at strangers he wants to shame. He is shouting at people who are hungry and have been paying attention to something that does not feed. The question is not why are you so foolish. The question is why go on with that when this is here.
And notice where the invitation is set. It is set at the exact hour the thing failed. Not after a period of reflection. Not once you can explain what happened. At the counter, with the flat thing still in your hand, He says hearken, and eat, and let your soul delight itself in fatness. Fatness is a table word, and I know tables. It means the rich part. The part you serve the people you love.
You have a standing invitation to a full table, and it was issued before tonight and it does not expire at the lights. I am not putting my own warmth over you there; that is Isaiah 55:2 as it stands, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a shout from an old marketplace and puts it in a car on a ring road. The table is not a reward for having worked out what went wrong. The table is set.
A turn is a turn, and it happens where you stand
Now the part that takes the distance out of it, and I want you to have it plainly.
You have been imagining a road back. Something with stages in it, and a period of proving, and a version of you further along who will be fit to arrive. That road is not written anywhere in this book, and the Holy Spirit has never once asked a person to build it. What exists is a turn, and a turn is done on the spot, with the feet where they are, in the direction of Somebody who is already facing you.
The word the prophets use for it is a walking word: to turn, to face about. It is not a word for a journey. Nobody in Scripture is ever told to go and get ready to turn. The turning is the getting ready.
You are one movement away, and the movement is not a journey and it never was. That is written into every place a prophet says turn, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an old word live in a body sitting in traffic with its jaw tight. Stand up, or face the window, or take your hand off the volume. That is the size of it.
And hear the other half, because it matters as much. What ran out has run out, and God has not. He is not a better version of the thing that went flat. He is not the next item on the playlist. He is the One the whole hunger was pointed at the entire time it was being answered by something else.
Here is what turns.
You have been treating tonight as a loss, and it is not a loss. Something you were leaning on has told you the truth about how much it could hold, and that truth arrived on time. Nobody had to take it from you. It simply set you down, and you are standing in the road, and the road is where the invitation gets shouted.
You are not stranded, you are addressed, and the One addressing you has been at the same counter shouting come since long before this evening. That is Isaiah 55 spoken over you as it stands, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has kept you here reading rather than turning it up again. He does not need the thing to be explained. He needs a face turned toward Him, and He is already facing you.
What ran out has run out. He has not. And the table He is calling you to is not a smaller table than the one you have been setting for everybody else.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, with your shoulders already turned. You are in Christ, and that is your standing to speak; the authority is His, given to you, and not something you earn back by working out what happened. Isaiah 55 is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries them, so these are not a technique and getting the wording right is not what turns anybody. The mountain here is not the thing that went flat. It is the sentence that says you have to travel before you may turn, and Jesus said the mountain is spoken to. So speak to it, and leave the outcome to Him, because how the next weeks feel is His to decide in His own way and not a test you are sitting.
- Thing that stopped carrying me tonight, you told the truth about your own size, and you are not my judge. Scripture says He calls me to eat what is good and let my soul delight itself in fatness, and that invitation was shouted long before you set me down.
- Reason I think I owe somebody before I am allowed to turn, you are not the road here, and I put you down in the name of Jesus. It is written in Isaiah 55 that the call goes out at the counter and not after the explanation, and the Holy Spirit is the one turning my shoulders while my hands are still full.
- Lord, You have not run out, and I am turning where I stand and not traveling to reach You. I thank You, because it is written that the table is set and the rich part is on it, and I am facing You now with nothing flat in my hands.
