The Man With the Keys

The yard behind the warehouse has been swept, which never happens, and there are lights strung from the fire escape to the fence post, and somebody has driven the forklift out of the way to make room for the tables.

Youssef is standing by the loading doors with the keys still in his hand.

Inside, in the yard, they are feeding forty people. Two of his uncles have been at the lamb since the morning. There is rice going round in the big tray, the one that only comes out for weddings, and somebody has brought the good glasses, and his aunt is making a speech that has already made two people cry.

It is for Rami. Rami is back. Rami is at the head of the table with his father's hand on his shoulder and a plate in front of him that nobody will let go empty, and this morning they gave him a set of keys to the side door and a place on the runs.

Youssef opens the warehouse every day at six. He does the cash and cash returns, the bad debtors, the supplier who always shorts the pallet. He carried the whole thing through the winter the roof went, and nobody has ever strung a light up for that, and he would not have wanted them to, and the two of those are true at once and they are pulling in different directions in his chest.

He is not angry with Rami. That is the thing he cannot explain to anybody. He is glad Rami is back. He was the one who kept saying they should call him.

He just cannot go into the yard. He has been standing at the loading doors for a while now with a set of keys he has had since he was nineteen, listening to a speech about somebody else, and his feet will not do it.

You are the one at the loading doors, and this is the part nobody has ever said gently to you, so let me.

Nobody here is the villain of this story

Let me start by refusing to do the thing that has probably been done to you.

Somewhere along the way, the older brother in that story became the bad guy. He gets used as a warning. He is the cold one, the small one, the one with the calculator, and every time it gets preached that way, one person in the room quietly decides that what they are feeling out by the loading doors is proof of something rotten in them, and they push the feeling down and stay outside with it.

That is not what happens in the story. The father comes out. He comes out to the older one exactly as he ran out to the younger one, in the same evening, with the same legs, and he does not tell him off once. He calls him son and he tells him what is already his.

So hear this before anything else. The thing in your chest is not wickedness. It is the ache of a man who has worked in a house for a long time without ever once looking up at the deed.

You are loved out here at the doors just as much as they are loving him in the yard, and the coming out to you has already happened. It is written into Luke 15 that the father goes out to both sons on the same night, and the Holy Spirit is the reason you are still standing near enough to hear the music instead of driving home.

Nobody ever issued the inheritance on output

Now the thing that will actually loosen the grip, and it is not a rebuke, it is a fact about your standing.

Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.Galatians 4:7

Read the order of it. Son, therefore heir. Not worker, therefore heir. Not reliable, therefore heir. Not the one who opened at six every morning for a decade, therefore heir. The inheritance is attached to sonship, and sonship was given, and nothing about your enormous faithfulness added a single line to a deed that was already made out in your name.

That is a strange kind of good news to receive, because at first it sounds like it makes the early mornings worthless. It does the opposite. It means the early mornings were never your rent. You were never paying for a place you already had. You have been a son in that warehouse the entire time, and you did all of it as a son, which means none of it was earning and all of it was inheritance being lived in.

You are an heir tonight, and you were an heir on every one of those mornings, and nothing in that yard is being paid for out of your share. Galatians 4 says son, therefore heir, and the Holy Spirit is the one bearing witness with your spirit that this is what you are, which is precisely why the arithmetic out here has never once made you feel better.

The lines fell in pleasant places and nobody read the deed

David writes a line that belongs to the man at the loading doors more than to almost anybody else.

The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places; yea, I have a goodly heritage.Psalm 16:6

Lines are boundary lines, the surveyor's cords laid out on the ground to mark what belongs to whom. And what David notices, in the middle of an ordinary life, is that the plot he is standing on is good, and that it fell to him rather than being won.

Here is what I want you to see, and it is the whole article. Everything in that yard has been yours all along. The lamb. The lights. The long table. The uncles arguing. The father's hand. All of it has been available to you every single day, and you have been out at the doors with the keys, doing the accounts on a heritage Psalm 16 had already deeded to you, while the Holy Spirit kept the music within earshot of a man who thought he was outside.

Nobody kept you out. There was no rope. There has never been a night in that house when a place was not laid for you, and the reason the party for Rami hurts so much is not that he was given something. It is that you have been standing inside your own inheritance for so long without drawing on it that a party looks like it must have come from somewhere else.

It did not come from your share. Nothing is ever taken off your side to pay for someone else's welcome.

You have a goodly heritage, you have had it the whole time, and no welcome given to another person has cost you one thread of it. Psalm 16 says the lines fell in pleasant places, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has kept the music audible from where you are standing, because the point of the sound is that you can hear it and walk in.
